Fishing for Ideas

Description

First assignment for my illustration class this year, my first year at MICA.

This is more of an editorial illustration class than I normally would have asked for - but it's required for illustration majors. Normally, I would try to be more obscure, but the last time I attempted as such with this phrase (my original idea in class for the assignment of making an image around the phrase "fishing for ideas", I drew a betta fish turning the day sky into the night sky, because I get a lot of ideas at night/when I sleep), the teacher disliked my interpretation, saying it had to be more literal.

As we went along and the class had a multitude of lightbulb fish and fishing rods and boats and things...I knew I still didn't want to do what everyone else was doing - but I still had to conform to the assignment. So I settled. It's still MY vision, but it does fit the assignment, I hope.

I'm putting this on my sketch/scrap account because I'm just not sure if I want it in my main gallery or not. I'm more comfortable with it here.

I used a reference for the helmet because those things are complicated.
Well, I used a lot of references, and I fit together the features I wanted, and omitted the ones I didn't. So this one isn't very historically accurate.

Fitting the assignment is a constant complaint for everyone so don't worry that you're the only one that has to do that. It's much more finding your own way through them and still being happy with what you made on the other side.

To that end, I think this is really successful for your phrase. A little more care in the render for some of the closer objects and hiding the brush in the further ones could tighten it up. These are just some things people will immediately pick out with the print for critique during class. Typically these are the first things that people make note of with any digital work presented.

I don't know how necessary the thought bubble is here either. It seems perfectly successful without it as a concept so it could be worth exploring without it and just replacing it with a light bulb floating that way to replace the space. Just a thought though!
